North American GSA Conference 2012

The Global Studies Association of North America, VP of Research, Dean of Social Sciences, and Centre for Global Studies will be sponsoring next year’s conference, “Dystopia and Global Rebellion” at University of Victoria, Vancouver Island, Canada on May 4-6, 2012.

Social crisis shakes Europe and the US, racist motivated violence shocks Norway, nuclear meltdown radiates Japan, while spreading drought and floods are billboards for global warming. It seems the future has arrived and it doesn’t look good.

Yet democratic movements spread like wildfire throughout the Middle East, youth movements come alive in the UK, France and Spain, rebellion takes to the streets in Greece, and the US working class wakes up in Wisconsin. Dystopia and global rebellion indeed. The 2012 conference theme focuses our attention on the problems and alternatives we face in our struggle for a just and better world.

Keynote speakers include William K. Carroll, Jerry Harris, Paul James, Martha McMahon, Kara Shaw, Manfred B. Steger, and Waziyatawin.

Abstracts of 100 words should be sent by March 21, 2012 to Jerry Harris at gharris234@comcast.net.

Cosmopolitan Strangers at Europe’s Invisible Borders: Arguments for a Multidisciplinary Political Sociology Inaugural Lecture

Professor Chris Rumford

All welcome. Admission free. No booking necessary. Followed by a reception in the Windsor Building Foyer. For more information 01784 414471.
It is well established that a multidisciplinary approach allows for the exploration of issues from a number of perspectives. Less well recognised is a more signifi can’t benefit, namely the possibility of studying things which are not recognised as issues or problems in any discipline. Political sociology is here recast as the study of liminality, and ‘cosmopolitan strangers’ and ‘invisible borders’ are not oxymorons but indicators of ‘inbetweenness’, the study of which can unlock important new research agendas .
