It is well established that a multidisciplinary approach allows for the exploration of issues from a number of perspectives. Less well recognised is a more signifi can’t benefit, namely the possibility of studying things which are not recognised as issues or problems in any discipline. Political sociology is here recast as the study of liminality, and ‘cosmopolitan strangers’ and ‘invisible borders’ are not oxymorons but indicators of ‘inbetweenness’, the study of which can unlock important new research agendas .
